TI Connect CE says "No calculator detected" even though it's plugged in? Here are the 5 most common causes and how to fix them on Windows and Mac.

TI Connect CE Not Recognizing Calculator — Fix

TI Connect CE says "No calculator detected" even though it's plugged in? Here are the 5 most common causes and how to fix them.

Fix 1: Try a Different USB Cable (Most Common Cause)

The TI-84 Plus CE uses a mini-USB cable. Many cables are charge-only and don't support data transfer — even if they charge the calculator fine.

Fix:

  • Use the cable that came with your calculator
  • Try a cable specifically labeled for data transfer
  • Test the cable with another device to confirm it transfers data

Fix 2: Use a Direct USB Port (Not a Hub)

USB hubs — especially unpowered ones — can't always supply enough power for the calculator to be recognized.

Fix:

  • Connect the USB cable directly to a port on your computer, not through a hub or dock
  • Try a different port on the same computer

Fix 3: Install or Reinstall TI Connect CE

TI Connect CE requires specific USB drivers. If the installation was incomplete, the calculator won't be recognized.

On Windows:

  1. Go to Control PanelDevice Manager
  2. With the calculator plugged in, look for an "Unknown Device" with a yellow warning icon
  3. If you see it: right-click → Update Driver → Search automatically
  4. If not: uninstall TI Connect CE completely, restart, and reinstall from education.ti.com

On Mac:

  1. Go to System SettingsPrivacy & Security
  2. Make sure TI Connect CE has permission to access USB devices

Fix 4: Make Sure the Calculator is On and at the Home Screen

The TI-84 Plus CE must be fully powered on and at the home screen when connected. Sleep mode or stuck screens prevent detection.

Fix:

  1. Press ON to wake the calculator
  2. Press 2ND + MODE (QUIT) to return to the home screen
  3. Then connect the USB cable

Fix 5: Restart Both Devices

Fix:

  1. Close TI Connect CE completely
  2. Unplug the USB cable
  3. Turn the calculator off (2ND + ON)
  4. Wait 10 seconds
  5. Turn the calculator back on
  6. Reconnect the USB cable
  7. Open TI Connect CE — wait 15 seconds

Still Not Working? Check Windows Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager)
  2. Plug in the calculator
  3. Look for a new entry — it might appear under Ports (COM & LPT) or Unknown Devices
  4. If you see it with a warning icon: right-click → Uninstall device
  5. Unplug the calculator, wait 5 seconds, plug back in

If no new entry appears at all when you plug in, the issue is the cable or the USB port itself.
